CENTRAL FLORIDA, USA (June 8, 2011) – Chief Radiation Physicist Daljit S. Saini, MS, DABR, of the Cancer Care Centers of Brevard announced that Bhavin Patadiya, MS (IT), MS (Med. Phys.), DABR has achieved the highest Board Certification in Medical Physics.

“Mr. Patadiya’s recent excellence is due in large part to his extensive experience at the St. Louis University Medical Center with the CyberKnife Cancer Treatment system,” said Saini. ”The CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery system represents the cutting edge in premiere cancer treatment.”

CyberKnife System

Cnt'd - Created by Accuray of California, the Cyberknife system uses technology originally designed to track cruise missiles. Consisting of a robotic arm system that continuously tracks, detects, and corrects for tumor and patient movement throughout the treatment, CyberKnife delivers hundreds of beams of focused radiation from up to 200 different angles.

These focused beams of radiation destroy a tumor with sub-millimeter accuracy without making a single incision. The range of motion that is possible with Cyberknife system offer a greater number of treatment positions that can offer fewer side effects and better clinical outcomes.

With the addition of Patadiya, the Cancer Care Centers of Brevard is the only cancer center on Florida’s Space Coast to provide this technology in its Radiation and Medical Physics Services – which includes three full-time Board Certified Physicists, and three Board Certified Medical Dosimetrists.

pares Normal Healthy Tissues
“Our Board Certified Medical Physicists and Dosimetrists are responsible for ensuring that the Radiation Oncologist’s prescribed dose of radiation is delivered accurately and safely to the tumor while sparing the normal healthy tissues,” said Saini, who moved to Brevard County, Florida from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA.
With a combined 52 years of Radiation Physics and 44 years of Medical Dosimetry experience, Cancer Car Centers of Brevard ensures that all patients receive the appropriate radiation treatment for their individual care needs without damaging the healthy areas of the body.

“Our highly trained and experienced department works tirelessly for all the patients of the Cancer Care Centers of Brevard with an unbreakable commitment to radiation safety and patient care,” said Patient Coordinator Marta Fiol.

On Site Docs and Experts

Emphasizing a team-based approach, the Cancer Care Centers of Brevard combines the skills and experience of three on site Radiation Oncologists, six on site Medical Oncologists, three on site Medical Physicists, and  three on site Dosimetrists.

“In addition to the accuracy in delivery of the radiation treatment, the planning of radiation treatment by experienced personnel makes a big difference in radiation treatment outcomes,” said Ravi Shankar, MD, Medical Director of Cancer Care Centers of Brevard. “Cancer Care Center’s Radiation Physics and Medical Dosimetry team delivers this for every single patient.”

CyberKnife uses a lightweight linear accelerator to generate radiation. A robotic arm moves around the patient and an image-guidance system tracks the target tumor, even while the patient is breathing. Gold “seeds” about the size of a grain of rice are implanted in the tumor. These “seeds” guide a cone of radiation about the width of a pencil, toward the target.

“Most patients receiving radiation therapy are not aware of the intense behind the scenes work that takes place before their radiation therapist performs their treatment,” said Fiol. “Every patient should know the level of care they are receiving, and demand only the highest level of radiation and clinical knowledge.

“For the past 25 years we have maintained a stellar safety record while bringing the latest cancer treatment technologies to the Space Coast,” said Fiol.
