Interview & Examination

During your initial consultation, you will be interviewed and examined by a Board-Certified Medical or Radiation Oncologist.  To help us understand your medical status, we will need to obtain copies of your medical records, health history, prescribed medications, and recent medical visits with other specialists, and if applicable, your biopsy reports, imaging and blood work.  We will review your information with you and answer any questions you may have.

Diagnostic Procedures

It is likely that you may have had imaging scans performed at another facility.  We will need to review all imaging documents so please bring your films or archived images (CD ROM) so that we can go over them with you.  This includes mammograms, x-rays, MRIs, PET/CT, bone scans and ultrasounds.  In some cases, additional imaging may be needed and a biopsy may be required if not already taken. We may recommend blood tests as part of your diagnostic work-up or in preparation for treatment.

Plan of Care

After your exam, imaging and other diagnostic procedures are completed, we will have enough information and a more complete picture of your cancer.  This allows us to “classify” or “stage” your cancer, which will govern how to best treat it. A treatment plan, which is a collection of measurements, imagery and dosing calculations, will be developed specifically for you so that we can effectively deliver the treatment.  Your custom-made plan is influenced by your overall health and the type and stage of your cancer.  It also takes into consideration information from other specialists, you, as well as any prescribed treatments and medications that may be part of holistic approach.

Follow-up Care & Recovery

We like to follow-up with our patients within 2-4 weeks of finishing radiation therapy and /or chemotherapy. We usually see our patients every 3-6 months thereafter. In addition to examining you, we may also order imaging and blood tests to follow you in your recovery.

Follow-ups assess nutrition, weight loss, appetite, pain control if needed, and general well-being. It may involve rehabilitation, or physical and occupational therapy, to help you return to work or other activities.
